Marvin L. Layne is a native of West Virginia, being born and raised in Guyandotte to Paul and Norma Layne along with his 5 brothers and 4 sisters. Marvin graduated from Huntington East High School where he excelled in football, basketball and track.

Marvin was a star athlete in high school and brought those athletic abilities to West Virginia State (University) by being part of the football, basketball and track squad his freshman season. He was asked to quit football by the basketball coach in order to just play basketball but, Marvin opted to play football and track. In football, he played wide receiver and was also part of the nucleus that started a track dynasty by setting school and conference records, which led to winning the WVIAC Conference Championships in 1969 and 1970.

After leaving West Virginia State (University) in 1971, Marvin coached children in football, basketball, track and softball while continuing his career in optics, being General Manager of Lens Crafters and Pearl Vision for many years.

Marvin and his wife Kathy (former “State” majorette) now live in Burlington, Ohio and enjoy spending time with their children, Maria, Marvin, II and Markessa as well as his 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Marvin wants all to know “I will always remember my times at West Virginia State and cherished memories will always be a part of me”
