Gray, who taught and coached at West Virginia State for 21 years, grew up in Donora, Pa., where he played high school sports with the renowned Stan Musial.
Gray taught at Prairie View A&M and coached baseball and football before coming to State High School where he had a championship basketball team in 1954 55. He transferred to the College as an assistant under the late Mark Cardwell. As head baseball coach, his team won three championships. Later, as head basketball coach, his Yellow Jackets won the WVIAC championship.
