The WVSU women's tennis team advanced to the round of 32 in the NCAA tournament Saturday with a 5-2 win over Slippery Rock at California, Pa.
The Yellow Jackets had to overcome a 1-2 deficit after doubles play.
Senior
Brittany Franco and sophomore
Nina Dillwald picked up the Jackets' lone doubles point winning 8-5 at the #1 spot.
WVSU recovered quickly in singles though as senior
Diana Cotoros won 6-1, 6-0 at #5 to tie things up at 2-2.
Franco wrapped hers up next followed by fellow senior
Charlotte Sandy and finally Dillwald clinching the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #3.
"We struggled in the doubles but really turned it around in singles mainly due to an outstanding effort from our three seniors," WVSU coach
John Simms said. "The win by Cotoros was big because she had lost to her opponent in our regular season match with them."
The Yellow Jackets (17-2) now face top-seeded host Cal-Pa. at noon Sunday with a spot in the final 16 in Denver on the line.
