WVSU narrowly falls in home opener

INSTITUTE – The West Virginia State University women's tennis team dropped their fall season opener, 4-3 to visiting Cedarville University. WVSU won the doubles point with a pair of wins, but Cedarville won four singles matches to take the match.

Talia Nichols and Mulema Mbapeh won their match at no. 1 doubles 7-5, while at no. 2 singles it was Lea Lugmayr and Christina Karagrigoriou who earned a 7-5 win to clinch the doubles point. 

In singles action, the Yellow Jackets earned a win at no. 3 singles, as Talia Nichols earned a win via retirement. At no. 4 singles, Mbapeh won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Cedarville was able to get wins at no. 1, no. 2 and no. 5 singles to even the match at three. The final singles match came at no. 6 singles, where Carlota Pamies Petit forced a third set, ultimately falling 7-6, 4-6, 5-7. 

WVSU will continue their fall schedule on Sept. 26 when they compete at the Fairmont State Fall Brawl, hosted by Fairmont State University.
