Jackets Survive Determined Bobcats, Rowdy Road Fans, Clinch fifth Straight Title

The Yellow Jacket women's tennis team traveled to Buckhannon knowing they needed a win over third place West Virginia Wesleyan to clinch their fifth straight conference championship Friday.

Meanwhile the Bobcats were hoping for an upset that would move them into a first place tie,

With a good size crowd composed mainly of the school;s soccer and baseball teams cheering them on the hosts jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play.

But the young WVSU squad righted itself after that and steadily climbed back into the match and then into the lead on the way to a 6-3 victory.

Sophomore first singles player Laura Isbey was the first off the court with a 6-2, 6-1 win to knot the match score.

Junior Nina Dillwald followed with a 6-0, 6-2 victory to give the Jackets their first lead of the day.

Freshman Lindsay Goff was next winning 6-2, 6-4 to run the score to 4-2.

Another freshman, Kierstin Hensley, served up the championship clincher moments later when she completed a tough 7-6, 6-0 win at second singles.

Sophomore Kayla McKnight wrapped up the WVSU scoring with a long three set win at fifth singles.

The Yellow Jackets wrap up their regular season at 2 p.m. Sunday at UVa-Wise.
