Over the last decade the University of California-Pa. women's tennis program has been the one to beat in its conference, the PSAC, and the NCAA Atlantic Region.
Wednesday the West Virginia State women's tennis team picked up its first win ever over the Vulcans closing out a 6-3 decision as darkness fell in Institute.
"We came very close to beating them the last couple of times we played," Yellow Jacket Coach
John Simms said. "It is good to finally get it done."
The Jackets took a 2-1 lead after doubles with
Kierstin Hensley and
Nina Dillwald picking up an 8-5 victory at #2 and
Kayla McKnight and
Lindsay Goff duplicating that score at #3.
McKnight was the first to finish her singles winning the #5 spot 6-0, 6-3. MEC Player of the Week
Laura Isbey was next off after rolling to a 6-0, 6-2 victory to boost WVSU to a 4-1 lead.
Cal-Pa. picked up a three set win at #3 singles to make the score 4-2.
Freshman
Kierstin Hensley then clinched the win for the Yellow Jackets with a 6-3, 6-2 at #2 singles. The squads then split the final two matches with
Lindsay Goff earning a 6-0, 6-0 win at #6.
The Yellow Jackets close out their regular season with matches at West Virginia Wesleyan Friday and UVa-Wise Sunday.
