INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State delivered one of its strongest performances of the spring on Tuesday afternoon, rolling past Bluefield State 6-1 at the Marvin D. Mills Tennis Complex in Institute. The Yellow Jackets claimed the doubles point and carried that momentum into singles play, winning five of six individual matches in a dominant home victory.
WVSU set the tone early in doubles by taking two of three flights. At No. 1, the pairing of
Amanda Menendez Thomasson and
Maria Mercedes Kaltakian edged Bluefield State's top duo in a tight 7-6 battle, while
Daniela Cruzado Fretel and
Talia Nichols were sharp in a 6-3 win at No. 2 to clinch the point. Although the Yellow Jackets dropped the No. 3 doubles match, the strong start gave WVSU an early edge and plenty of momentum heading into singles.
That momentum only grew in singles, where WVSU won five of six matches in straight sets. Menendez Thomasson cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2, and Cruzado Fretel followed with a commanding 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3. Nichols battled to a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 4, while
Carlota Pamies Petit controlled her match at No. 5 with a 6-4, 6-0 result.
Christina Karagrigoriou capped the day with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6, helping the Yellow Jackets seal an emphatic team win over a Bluefield State squad that entered the match with a 15-3 record.
