INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State Women's Tennis picked up right where they left off with a 5-2 victory over Davis & Elkins. Men fought hard, but fell short in a couple three-set Singles matches to ultimately decide the 5-2 defeat to the Senators.
West Virginia State's women delivered a convincing 5-2 win to open the day, taking control early with the doubles point and carrying that momentum into singles play. The duos of
Maria Mercedes Kaltakian and
Amanda Menendez Thomasson at No. 1 and Daniela Cruzado Fretel and
Talia Nichols at No. 2 each earned doubles victories to give WVSU the edge. In singles, Kaltakian and Menendez Thomasson dominated in straight sets at the top two positions, while
Christina Karagrigoriou battled through a three-set win at No. 5.
Carlota Pamies Petit added another straight-set victory at No. 6, helping seal the team win despite a pair of singles losses in the middle of the lineup.
In the men's match, West Virginia State dropped a 5-2 decision that was much closer than the final score. Davis & Elkins swept all three doubles matches to take the first team point. WVSU responded with wins from
Forkane Lebdi at No. 1 and
Niclas Naedele at No. 2, both earning straight-set victories to keep things competitive. Yellow Jackets fell in straight-sets at No. 4 and No. 6.
Patchara Suklian at No. 3 and
Wacil El Hanafi at No. 5 battled into third-set tiebreaks, but the Senators secured those extra sets and ultimately the match.
Both Men and Women look to continue their seasons at Chestnut Hill College on Friday, March 27.
