INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State delivered a strong showing on the road Friday, earning a dominant women's sweep and a hard-fought 4-2 men's victory over Chestnut Hill College.
The WVSU women controlled the match from start to finish in a 4-0 shutout. The Yellow Jackets set the tone early in doubles play, as
Maria Mercedes Kaltakian and
Amanda Menendez Thomasson rolled to a 6-1 win at No. 1, while
Christina Karagrigoriou and
Carlota Pamies Petit added default victory at No. 3 to secure the doubles point. In singles, Kaltakian remained sharp with a straight-sets win at No. 1 (6-0, 6-4), and Menendez Thomasson followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2. Karagrigoriou was waiting with a win by default to clinch the fourth team and the sweep for WVSU women.
The WVSU men responded with resilience in a 4-2 victory, overcoming an early deficit after dropping the doubles point.
Niclas Naedele and
Patchara Suklian provided the lone doubles win at No. 3 (6-1), but Chestnut Hill claimed the other two courts. In singles, however, the Yellow Jackets surged. Naedele earned a tough straight-sets win at No. 2, while Suklian followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3.
Facundo Campana Urcia gathered another point in straight-sets at No.6, but it was
Heinrich Lindeque and
Wacil El Hanafi each battling through three-set matches to secure decisive points.
Matches tomorrow at Bloomsburg have been cancelled. You will find the Yellow Jackets at Fairmont State for their next matchup on Saturday, April 4.
