INSTITUTE, WV – The West Virginia State University women's tennis team won three tournament matches over the weekend to claim the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship.
The Yellow Jackets finished the fall season unbeaten with a 15-0 overall record and a 10-0 mark in conference play.
They defeated West Virginia Wesleyan 5-0 in Friday's quarterfinals and the rolled over Davis and Elkins 5-0 in the semifinals on Saturday.
The final Sunday morning proved to be a much tougher challenge as WVSU faced second-seeded West Liberty for the WVIAC tournament title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
In the end the Yellow Jackets prevailed by a 5-3 score.
“As always West Liberty was well prepared and determined to turn around the regular season result,” WVSU coach
John Simms said. “But our players were very determined and came through with the win.”
The Yellow Jackets defeated West Liberty 7-2 during the regular season.
Sunday
Brittany Franco and
Cora Berna teamed to win 8-1 at second doubles with
Charlotte Sandy and
Jordan Kerns capturing third doubles by an 8-0 count.
Berna,
Diana Cotoros, and Kerns followed with singles wins to earn the championship for WVSU.
Andreea Slusarciuc and
Amber Schneider complete the team.
The victory marks the second WVIAC tournament crown won by the Yellow Jackets in the last six seasons and comes on the heels of the program picking up its fourth regular season crown in seven seasons.
The NCAA tournament begins the first weekend in May.
