Baseball Wins Pair of Hard Fought Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Call it clutch play,

Call it gutsy.

Call it determination.

Whatever words you use to describe the Yellow Jackets' effort Saturday the result was a doubleheader sweep of visiting Glenville State by scores of 3-1 and 4-3 Saturday.

"The guys know what they need to do," WVSU Baseball Coach Sean Loyd said. "They were really focused today."

Junior Colby Gainer turned in another outstanding performance in the game going all seven innings to pick up the win.

He did not issue a walk while scattering nine hits. Several times he pitched his way out of trouble with the biggest threat coming in the sixth when Glenville landed runners on second and third with just one out.

But Gainer struck out the next Pioneer and coaxed a weak groundout to second to end the threat.

"He had really improved at that," Loyd said. "He's become one of the top pitchers in the conference."

The right-hander was going on short rest having thrown a complete game on Tuesday also. a 2-1 win at West Virginia Wesleyan.

The Jackets fell behind early as the Pioneers' third batter hit a solo home run with two outs.

WVSU answered quickly with a long ball of its own as Trayvis Patterson belted a two-run shot in the bottom of the frame

Jonathan Cline drove a run with a double in the second to give Gainer some cushion to work with.

Leadoff hitter Brandon Wright had a pair of hits in the contest.

The Yellow Jackets took an early lead in the nightcap when Phil Mandt blasted a solo shot over the centerfield fence in the second inning. WVSU added an unearned run on a passed ball in the fourth for a 2-0 lead.

The Pioneers showed they had some fight left though as they pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh and then held off a WVSU threat in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings.

A one-out, bases empty, home run in the top of the eighth gave Glenville State its first lead of the game.

The Jackets came within a swing of the bat of losing before Patterson lined a single to left in the bottom of the eighth. After Patterson stole second Mandt picked up his second RBI of the game with a single up the middle to make the score 3-3.

There would not be any more scoring until freshman Chris Jordan lined a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence to lead off the bottom of the tenth.

"He had hit a couple of deep flies earlier," Loyd said. "We know he is capable of that."

Jonathan Murphy pitched the final three innings to earn the win and improve to 4-2 on the season.

The first pitch Sunday is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. as the squads face off in another twinbill.
