WVSU drops a pair at UC

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia State baseball team suffered a pair of losses Saturday on the penultimate day of the regular season. The Yellow Jackets lost 4-2 to University of Charleston in the first game before a 2-0 pitcher's duel in the second game.

WVSU is now 17-28 on the season, and 10-18 in Mountain East Conference play. UC improves to 21-26 on the season, with an 18-10 MEC record.

In the first game, UC got on the board first, on an RBI single, putting them ahead 1-0. WVSU pitcher Bryce Eggleton was able to leave runners on base with a strikeout to end the inning. The teams then posted matching zeroes, with UC leaving a pair on base in the bottom of the fifth. The Yellow Jackets broke through in the sixth, as Garrett Wagoner hit a leadoff home run to deep left field to tie the game at one.

After WVSU put runners on first and second, Angel Oquendo reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, allowing Michael Bittinger to score the go-ahead run for State. UC responded with three runs in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. WVSU got a seventh inning single from Ethan Spolarich, but UC prevailed 4-2.

Game two was a pitcher's duel, with the only runs coming in the bottom of the second, where the Golden Eagles worked an RBI walk and hit a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead. Karson Frye was solid on the mound, throwing five innings for WVSU, allowing two runs on one hit. Offensively, Wagoner went 3-for-3, while Bittinger was 2-for-4.

The Yellow Jackets and Golden Eagles will finish the series, and the regular season Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader at Cal Bailey Field. Prior to the first game, WVSU will recognize the 2026 senior class. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
