Saturday Sweep for Yellow Jackets

The Yellow Jackets swept a baseball doubleheader Saturday defeating the University of Virginia at Wise 1-0 and 6-5 at Cal Bailey Field.

Sophomore Hunter Bradley scattered seven hits while walking just one and striking out five in going the distance to lead the way in the opener. WVSU tallied the game's lone run in the third when Trevor Sampson led off with a triple down the right field line and crossed the plate on Jared Hunt's single up the middle.

It looked like the Jackets were going to have a much easier time in the nightcap when they jumped out to a 5-1 lead after four innings. Matthew Washington got things rolling with a home run to left to lead off the second inning. Trayvis Patterson gave WVSU a 2-1 advantage with a sacrifice fly in the third.

Jacob Frantz drove in a run with a bunt single in the fourth and Brandon Wright drove in two more with a single to right later in the frame.

But the Cavaliers rallied with three runs in the seventh and tied it with another run in the eighth.

Jonathan Murphy came in to pitch for the Jackets with no outs and shut down Wise the rest of the way in the eighth and on through the ninth and tenth to pick up the win.

Christopher Jordan singled to start the bottom of the tenth, advanced to second on a Phil Mandt sacrifice and came around to score the game winner when Washington doubled to right.

With the sweep the Yellow Jackets took three of four from the Cavaliers in the weekend series. The Jackets' Friday win was another 1-0 affair with Colby Gainer throwing a three-hitter striking out six and walking none.

Trevor Sampson drove in the game winner in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out single to right after Matthew Washington had singled and Jalen Benjamin doubled.

The Yellow Jackets host Ohio Valley at 1 p.m. Tuesday before heading to West Virginia Wesleyan for a Saturday and Sunday four game set.
