Yellow Jacket Men Wrap Up Season on High Note

Box Score The offseason will pass a little easier now for the members of the WVSU men's basketball program.

Saturday afternoon the Yellow Jackets wrapped up their season with a hard fought 78-62 win over intra-county rival Charleston in front of a boisterous crowd at the Walker Convocation Center.

Even though WVSU led throughout, never by less than seven after the first seven minutes, and won by a convincing margin, the game had the feel of a much closer contest throughout. There was also a sense of determination on the part of the Yellow Jackets that could almost be felt by those in attendance.

They simply were not going to be denied this one bright moment.

"Tonight was a team win that was a long time coming," WVSU Head Coach Bryan Poore said. "We had a rough season with injuries that have taken players off teh floor for extended periods of time and for our guys to continue to work and come out with a win against our rival in our last game is a good way to end the year and move forward."

At one point this season there were four Jackets out with one injury or another. Three of them were starters.

Saturday was Senior Day but, as Poore pointed out, the victory was definitely a team effort.

A total of five Yellow Jackets scored in double figures led by Sable Cooper with 16 points.

Seniors Terrance Jenkins and Tyrie Elliott added 14 and 12 respectively, Ernest Jenkins added 13 and Brent Bauer 10.

Mohammed Camara contributed six points and 12 rebounds while Cody Morris added seven and 11.

Bauer finished with six assists, Cooper four and Morris three.

WVSU can return nine players next season who averaged at least 11.9 minutes per game this season. Among those are the team's top three scorers and four of the top five rebounders.

Ernest Jenkins ended the season as the first freshman to lead the Yellow Jackets in scoring as a freshman since Dave Hamilton during the 1966-67 season, fifty years ago.
