WHEELING, W.Va. — West Virginia State's season came to a close Wednesday night as seventh-seeded Frostburg State held off the 10th-seeded Yellow Jackets, 93–85, at WesBanco Arena.
WVSU (8-22) got a pair of big scoring nights from
Blake Goodman and
Jaylen Subject, but Frostburg leaned on a 36-point performance from Trey Simmons and a steady parade to the free-throw line to survive a second-half push.
The Yellow Jackets trailed 46–36 at the break, then came out sharp after halftime — scoring 49 points in the second half and briefly taking the lead midway through the period. Goodman's 3-pointer at the 14:38 mark put WVSU in front 58–57, part of a stretch where the Yellow Jackets repeatedly answered to keep the game within a possession.
Frostburg State (16-14) responded behind Simmons and Kyle Whippen, who combined for 61 points. The Bobcats went 23-of-33 at the foul line — including 19 makes after halftime — and paired that with 25 fast-break points to regain control down the stretch.
Goodman finished with 26 points on 8-of-19 shooting and 7-of-9 at the stripe, while Subject added 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting with three 3-pointers and seven rebounds.
Trey Harris chipped in 13 points and seven boards, and
Bryson Smith added nine points, six rebounds and four assists.
As a team, WVSU shot 30-of-73 from the field (9-of-29 from 3) and 16-of-22 at the line, and won the offensive glass 16–10, but Frostburg's edge at the stripe and in transition proved decisive.
