ATHENS, W.Va. — West Virginia State nearly erased a halftime deficit and had multiple chances in the final minute, but Concord closed at the line in the closing seconds to secure an 84–81 Mountain East Conference victory Tuesday night inside the Carter Center.
Concord (14–13, 10–9 MEC) led 45–41 at the break after shooting 8-of-15 from three in the opening half, while the Yellow Jackets (8–19, 4–15 MEC) kept pace by living in the paint and getting to the stripe. WVSU finished with 38 points in the paint and went 20-of-26 at the free-throw line.
The Yellow Jackets pulled even at 54–54 with 14:27 left, then later tied it again at 68–68 on a
Trey Harris three-pointer at the 9:30 mark. Down two in the final minute, WVSU got a stop at :30 and had a chance to take the lead, but a late miss led to a foul on the rebound with no time left. Boubacar Djigo knocked down two free throws at 0:00 to seal it.
Jaylen Subject paced WVSU with 25 points, adding two blocks and two steals. Harris finished with 22 points and six rebounds, while
Andrew Shull added 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Bryson Smith chipped in eight points with four steals.
Djigo led Concord with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Josiah Rickards hit five three-pointers and scored 17 points, and Anfernee Hanna added 18.
State will host the University of Charleston for the final regular season game on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 4:00 p.m.
