Box Score This season's Yellow Jacket men's basketball team has shown no lack of fight and resilience.
Both of those qualities were on full display Tuesday night when WVSU hosted West Liberty.
Never mind that the Hilltoppers came into the game with a 10-1 record, ranked fourth in the country, third in the country in scoring, and beating opponents by an average of over 23 points a game.
Also never mind that they built a 20 point lead midway through the second half.
The Yellow Jackets never stopped fighting pulling to within five points twice in the closing minutes and two of those occassions the Jackets had possession with a chance to pull to within three before finally falling 100-93.
"I was proud of our comeback tonight," WVSU Coach
Bryan Poore said. "We had a chance to lay down and let the game get out of hand but we fought back."
The Jackets drained four 3-pointers during a 12-0 run starting with 4:33 left to climb back into the game.Â
Ernest Jenkins started it off,
Sable Cooper hit two, and
Jayson Hankins another while the WVSU defense was holding the Hilltoppers in check.
Sophomore point guard
Brent Bauer led the Jackets with 28 points, Jenkins finished with 18 and Cooper 13.
DeQuan Doyle pulled down 12 rebounds to lead a WVSU effort that saw the Jackets our-rebound the taller visitors 44-35.Â
"We still have a way to go as a team," Poore said. "But hopefully they will continue to grow together."
