Women Roll Over Bobcats, Men's Rally Falls Just Short

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
The WVSU women's basketball team returned home after a three game road swing and returned to what has become the squad's standard operating procedure.

The Yellow Jackets trailed by one after the first quarter but gradually wore down visiting West Virginia Wesleyan to pick up an 89-61 win.

State's pressure defense forced the Bobcats into 26 turnovers and held them to 32.3 percent shooting.

Meanwhile the Yellow Jackets were able to hit 50.8 percent from the floor and scored 48 points in the paint as their fast-paced offense produce several lay-up opportunities.

"When we play hard and with the effort that we played with tonight we can beat anyone," WVSU Head Coach Charles Marshall said.

The Yellow Jackets scored the first nine points of the second quarter and then took off on a 12-3 run sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers from freshman Sydney Bates later in the period to take control.

"The ladies played with a ton of energy and passion tonight," said Marshall.

Shae Hines led WVSU with 19 points and five assists.

Bates finished with 16 points. Senior Rachel Ward came off the bench and provided a spark by hitting 5-of-6 shots, including four from 3-point range, to score 14 points.

Jordan Miller added 12 and Shealyn Shafer 10.
The second game did not go as well for WVSU as the men fell 78-73 to West Virginia Wesleyan in a hard fought contest.

The Bobcats were hot from outside early hitting 8-of-11 shots from 3-point range in the first half to lead 41-37 going into the break.

While the Yellow Jackets won the battle inside against the taller Wesleyan squad the Bobcats hot shooting continued and they stretched their advantage to 11 midway through the second half.

The Yellow Jackets refused to surrender though and were able to pull within one on an Ernest Jenkins jumper with 2:07 to play.

But with time running down and the Jackets forced to foul the Bobcats sank 8-of-9 free throws down the stretch to hold off WVSU.

The Jackets ended up with a 46-31 rebound advantage.

Jenkins finished with 19 points and Jayson Hankins added 14

DeQuan Doyle and Terrance Jenkins each wound up with a double-double as Doyle had 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds while Jenkins went for 10 and 11.
