Jackets Win three of four at Glenville, Clinch Division Crown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 The Yellow Jacket baseball team left Institute Friday morning for a four game series at Glenville State with a three game lead in the place Mountain East Conference Southern Division over the second Pioneers.

Later Friday afternoon that lead shrank to two games after Glenville won the opener 2-0.

But by the time the WVSU players had packed up to head home Saturday they had the division crown in hand after coming back to defeat the Pioneers 6-1 in Friday's nightcap and then sweeping Saturday's twinbill 5-3 and 3-2.

"It's a good weekend anytime you take three out of four against a good team," Yellow Jacket Head Coach Sean Loyd said. "All four games were tough and our guys did a really good job of battling offensively, on the mound, and defensively."

WIth a 21-7 conference record WVSU now leads Glenville State (17-28 overall, 16-12 in MEC) by five games with four remaining in the regular season.

"We are excited about clinching and that was definietly one of our goals," Loyd said. "However, we have four games games coming up next weekend and we need a sharp week of practice to get ready."

The Yellow Jackets are scheduled to host local rival University of Charleston for a pair of doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday.

"All in all we are happy with where we are at but not satisfied just yet," Loyd said.

Here is a quick look at each of this weekend's contests:

Glenville State 2, WVSU 0 -- The Jackets lose a pitching duel as both teams collect just four hits. Jamison Jones has two of the Yellow Jackets' but WVSU leaves eight runners stranded while the Pioneers leave just four.

WVSU 6, Glenville State 1 -- The second game was much closer than the score indicates as the Jackets led just 2-0 going into the ninth inning. Jones and Trenton Porter each had three hits and Trayvis Patterson drove in two runs. Porter belted a solo home run. Dustin Kincaid went the distance allowing only four hits, walking none, and striking out six.

WVSU 5, Glenville State 3 -- The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first in Saturday's opener as Porter led off with a double and five batters later Josh Kiser cleared the bases with a double. Josh Falbo gave up only two hits in six innings of work and Curtis Johnson tossed a hitless and scoreless seventh.

WVSU 3, Glenville State 2 -- In the most dramatic game of the series the Jackets took a 3-0 lead into the ninth inning only to see the Pioneers rally for two runs and get the tying runner to second with two outs. Johnson relieved starter Tyler Hall and fell behind 2-0 in the count before striking out the final batter swinging. Kiser had two hits and Brandon Wright doubled and drove in two runs for WVSU.
