Follow Baseball, Softball on the Road This Weekend

The West Virginia State baseball and softball squads take to the road this weekend for diamond action.

Baseball heads to UVa-Wise (15-18 overall, 5-11 in MEC) for a pair of twinbills starting at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The Yellow Jackets have been on a roll lately winning eight of their last 10 games to improve from 8-8 to 16-10 overall.

Thenton Porter and Phillip Mandt have been leading the Jackets at the plate over that stretch. Over the last 10 games Porter has hit for average at .417 and power with a slugging percentage of .722. Mandt is batting a strong .394 over that period and knocked in 12 runs.

While the offense has been potent during that stretch, averaging 6.1 runs per game, it has been the pitching that has been leading the way.

The staff has allowed just 3.1 earned runs a contest with relievers Curtis Johnson, Colby Gainer, Ryan Baldwin, and Trey Salisbury giving up zero earned runs in12.1 innings of work.

Starter Dustin Kincaid has posted a 1.93 ERA in two starts with 15 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched.

As a staff the WVSU pitchers are elading the Mountain East Conference in ERA by wide margin, 3.3 to second place West Liberty's 4.26.
