WVSU Baseball Sweeps Notre Dame

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The WVSU baseball squad swept a doubleheader from visiting Notre Dame College Monday taking the opener 6-2 and the nightcap 5-1.

"It was two good wins for us," Yellow Jacket Coach Sean Loyd said. "We got excellent starting pitching in both games."

The Yellow Jackets came out of the gate swinging with five runs on five hits and three Falcon errors.

Actually they came out walking as Dylan Grimm and Jamison Jones led off the bottom of the first by drawing back-to-back passes. Trenton Porter and Josh Kiser later followed with singles to produce runs. Brett Strahin's fielder's choice groundout sent Porter home. Strahin stole second and took third on a wild pitch that allowed Kiser to score. Jonathan Cline followed with a single to drive in Strahin.

The Jackets added an unearned run in the second inning.

Senior Josh Falbo went all seven innings on the mound scattering five hits and striking out seven.

It took the Jackets a little longer to get the offense rolling in the nightcap.

WVSU put two runs on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Trayvis Patterson led off with a single and Porter followed with a home run over the centerfield fence.

Porter drove in two more runs when he doubled to left with Jamison Jones and Patterson aboard. Phillip Mandt closed out the WVSU scoring when his sacrifice fly brought Porter home from third later in the inning.

"I was happy to see us swing the bats better today and thought our hitters showed a much better approach than they had Friday," said Loyd.

Tyler Hall went 8 1/3 to pick up the victory with Curtis Johnson coming on to get the final two outs.

The Yellow Jackets have now won six of the last seven games.

"I like the way the entire team is going about their jobs right now," Loyd said.

WVSU will play a non-conference game Wednesday at Davis & Elkins with the first pitch schedule for 3 p.m.
