The basketball season came to an end for the Yellow Jackets Tuesday night as the shorthanded men's team fell 70-54 at West Virginia Wesleyan and the women's squad let a lead slip away on its home court as visiting University of Virginia at Wise handed WVSU an 84-74 defeat.
In Buckhannon the men started the game with just six players due to injuries and illness. They finished with five as leading scorer
Markee Mazyck fouled out with nearly 11 minutes remaining.
The Jackets could only hit 25 percent from the floor in the opening half as they trailed 31-16 going into the break. They recovered to shoot 51.7 percent in the second half but could not overcome the early deficit.
Tyrie Elliott led WVSU with 14 points,
Brent Bauer and Terrance Jenkins added 12 each, and Mazyck 11 in just 25 minutes of action.
In Institute it looked like the WVSU women were on their way to a Thursday contest at the Civic Center for most of the night.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to quick 11-2 then 16-5 leads and held an advantage for over 32 minutes of the 40 minute contest.
The visitors would never quit though scoring 11 straight points to tie the score at 16-16 early in the second quarter.
WVSU recovered though and as the Jackets came back to build a 67-59 lead with 6:49 to play and stayed in front until a Wise 3-pointer completed a 10-0 run and put the Cavaliers ahead 69-67.
This time the Jackets could not recover even though they hit 56 percent of their shots in the second half.as the visitors drained 59.4 percent of their second half attempts.
The Yellow Jackets' hot shooting did not continue down the stretch though as WVSU could sink just 2-of-7 shots and turned the ball over three times. Meanwhile UVa-Wise converted 8-of-9 field goal attempts during the same period.

Alexus Hobbs had a big game with 18 points and 10 rebounds and
Shealyn Shafer added 16 points.
