Box Score 2 The Yellow Jacket basketball squads experience different results on Senior Day with the women winning 77-72 to start the day against visiting West Virginia Wesleyan.
Unfortunately the men did not fare as well dropping a 76-58 decision to the Bobcats.
The women's contest featured one drastic momentum shift after another.
Wesleyan jumped out to a nine-point first quarter lead before the Yellow Jackets recovered to knot the score at 18-18 to end the period. The Jackets (12-12 overall, 9-9 MEC) remained on a roll going into the second period, sprinting ahead by as many as 13 points before taking a 47-38 advantage into halftime.
Shealyn Shafer tallied 15 of her 22 points in the opening half with
Rachel Ward adding 12.
Momentum swung back to West Virginia Wesleyan (6-16, 4-14) after the break as the Bobcats opened the second half with a little 9-2 burst to pull within two points.
WVSU managed to hold on to a slim lead until a Bobcat bucket in the closing seconds left the teams tied again after three periods at 59-59.
Wesleyan kept that momentum going into the fourth quarter by scoring the first five points of the period.
The last run of the game belonged to the Yellow Jackets though.
Senior
Deyahnna Styles hit a driving laup with 5:32 to play to tie things up at 64-64.
A couple of minutes later Ward drained a 3-pointer to give WVSU a 67-64 advantage and the Jackets led the rest of the way.
Ward hit 7-of-12 shots from 3-point range and finished with 23 points. Shafer added 16 rebounds.
The visitors jumped out to a quick 14-2 lead in the men's game on the way to a 47-27 halftime lead.
The Jackets could not get the ball to go down in the opening half hitting just 32 percent from the floor. Meanwhile the Bobcats (14-10, 9-9) were draining 54 percent of their shots.
The squads battled on fairly even ground in the second half but the Yellow Jackets (6-17, 4-14) could never overcome the early deficit.
Senior
Markee Mazyck led WVSu with 17 points and eight rebounds. Freshman
Frank Webb added 15 points.
