Jenkins Record Breaking Performance Paces WVSU Men

Box Score The Yellow Jackets trailed by as many as seven points early in the first half Saturday against visiting Urbana.

Then the Jackets pulled ahead by as many as 10 before settling for a 48-42 halftime lead.

After the break WVSU never trailed with the margin bouncing between three and 12 points as the Jackets turned back any Blue Knight rally attempt in picking up an 87-76 win to move to 2-2 in Mountain East Conference play.

"It is good to bounce back and get a win after such a tough loss Thursday," WVSU Head Coach Bryan Poore said. "We are still a work in progress and every win will give us a little confidence."

The recent play of freshman guard Earnest Jenkins should help in that area also.

Jenkins hit 10 of 17 from 3-point range to break a WVSU single game record previously shared by a couple of elite players.

Breaking the single-game 3-point mark is impressive.

"We have had some great shooters," Poore said. "For him to break the record as a freshman bodes well for our future!"

The mark of nine 3-pointers in a single game was held by four former Yellow Jackets.

Among them are 2004 conference Player of the Year Mike Taylor and Ted Scott who was the 2007 and 2009 conference Player of the Year also. Ronald Donaldson also shared the previous record hitting nine in 2003.

The last time a WVSU player hit nine from beyond the arc was on March 13, 2010 when Jason Emerson did it in NCAA regional play after the Jackets won the old West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship.

The Yellow Jackets finished the season ranked 12th nationally that year.

Jenkins finished with 33 points to lead all scorers Saturday.

"I knew Ernie would be a good fit in our program and I am really pleased with his progress," Poore said. "Sometimes he is a little too unselfish but he has a good basketball IQ and wants to look for a better shot."

He raised his team-high scoring average to 18.7 points per game. The Washington, D.C. product is hitting 50.7 percent from the floor and 48.1 percent from 3-point
range.

Jayson Hanks added 17 points and Sable Cooper came off the bench to to hit all four of his shot attempts, including 3-3 from 3-point range, to finish with 11.
