Box Score 2 The Yellow Jackets and the visiting Notre Dame women's basketball teams spent the first half of Thursday evening's contest locked in a fast-moving race up and down the court at Walker Convocation Center.
When the checkered flag finally came down WVSU had scored a 97-81 victory.
There were 3-pointer shots off transition and quick passing breaks resulting in layups every few seconds.
By the end of the half WVSU had managed to pull ahead by seven points at 41-34.
Then the Yellow Jackets found another gear.
Like a race car after a really good pit stop the Jackets hit the court after halftime and sped off on a 9-0 run to run their halftime advantage to 50-34. After a few minutes of exchanging buckets the Yellow Jackets sprinted off on a 10-2 run to surge to a 67-43 lead with 3:48 left in the third quarter and settle matters.
"We came out with a ton of energy," WVSU Head Coach
Charles Marshall said, "and they followed the game plan."
Only a cold spell down the stretch, the Jackets hit just one bucket over the last 4:05, kept the Jackets from reaching the century mark for the third time in the young season.
Jasmine Davis hit 8-12 shots including 6-10 from 3-point range to lead WVSU. Shea Hines added 20 and senior
Shealyn Shafer 16 points and 11 rebounds.
The West Virginia State men dropped a hard fought, see-saw contest 81-79 to the Falcons in the nightcap.
The score was tied five times and there were nine lead changes.
The Yellow Jackets led early but Notre Dame fought back to tie the score at 42-42 at halftime.
Roles reversed in the second half with the Falcons holding a narrow advantage in the early going before WVSU rallied to take a lead midway through the period.
Notre Dame scored the final points of the game with 14.7 seconds to play.
The Yellow Jackets then missed a 3-point attempt but out-fought the visitors for the rebound and HeadÂ
Coach Bryan Poore was able to get a final timeout with 1.6 seconds left and the Jackets inbounding under their own basket.
The ensuing play set up an good open look for the Jackets just beyond the 3-point line on the left wing but the final shot rolled out as the buzzer sounded.
Ernest Jenkins paced WVSU with 23 points,
Brent Bauer added 17 and seven assists with
Jayson Hankins contributing 13 points and 10 rebounds.
