Overtime looked like a certainty Monday night.
After all there were only 3.6 seconds to play, the score was tied, and host Virginia-Wise was inbounding the ball from underneath the West Virginia State basket.
But the Yellow Jackets'
Ernest Jenkins stepped in front of the inbounds pass and was fouled as he attempted a long 3–pointer.
That sent Jenkins to the free throw line for three shots with 0.2 seconds showing.
He calmly sank his first shot and then the third to give WVSU a 78-76 win.
"It was a great team win and one that we needed to build some confidence," Yellow Jacket Head Coach
Bryan Poore said. "It is extremely difficult to win on the road in this league."
The Cavaliers held small leads most of the first half before WVSU came on to take a 41-36 at halftime.
The Jackets maintained a lead through most of the second half before Wise took a one point lead with 6:01 to play.
Jenkins hit a pair of free throws with 5:52 remaining to give WVSU the lead back and the Jackets stretched it to 76-70 on a Jenkins jumper with 2:05 showing.
The Cavaliers rallied to tie the score with 36 seconds to go.
A Jenkins 3-point attempt with five seconds left was off the mark setting up the final series of events.
"We are still a work in progress," Poore said. "But I like the way we going."
Jenkins finished with 13 points,
Jayson Hankins led the way with 16 while
Brent Bauer added 15 points and eight assists.
The WVSU women dropped a 94-91 decision in Monday's first game. The Jackets were led by
Tatyana Reynolds' 20 points.
Neither team plays again until Notre Dame College visits Institute on Thursday, December 1.
