Workman Becomes First WVSU Golfer to Win an Event

People get into a certain sport for a lot of different reasons.

Their parents push them into it, their friends played so they joined in, an older sibling played the sport, etc., etc..

How West Virginia State University freshman Jacob Workman became a golfer is pretty simple.

"I live on a golf course," he said. "That's a little motivation."

The former Chapmanville High star grew up next to Logan Country Club.

The 19-year-old first picked up a club eight years ago. Since then he has played countless rounds on that club course and others.

This past weekend all of those hours of practice helped him become the first Yellow Jacket golfer to win an event when he recorded the low score of 148 for two rounds in the Alderson-Broaddus Invitational held at the Bel Meadows Country Club in Clarksburg.

Workman shot a first round 71 followed by a 77 on the second day to finish two strokes ahead of the host Battlers' James Jeffries on the 7,117 yard, par 72, course.

"The 71 was pretty solid," Workman said. "I played pretty good."

Bailey Beckwith had the second best score for WVSU with a two day total of 158, good for ninth place. Overall the Yellow Jackets wound up fourth as a team in the five team event.

"We had a couple of guys not play as well as they usually do," WVSU golf coach Sonny Anderson said. "We should do better next time out."

No matter what the other players do Anderson appears to have a rising star he can depend on to lead the Jackets.

Workman had a stellar high school career. He was named Al-Cardinal Conference three times, All-Logan County three times, and won both the Cardinal Conference and Logan County championships as a senior.

He qualified for the state high school tournament along the way and this past summer he qualified for the West Virginia Open held at Sleepy Hollow.

While no one stroke or club stands out as his best Workman does have one area he considers to be his strength.

"Probably my mental game," he said. "I like to believe I think my way around the golf course better than other golfers."

With his first year of college golf off to a good start Workman is confident but cautious about the rest of the season.

"I feel pretty solid about my game but we still have a long season to go," he said. "I still think I can improve."

Next up for the Yellow Jackets is a dual match at Davis and Elkins this Saturday.
