10/3/2023 8:36:00 PM

WARREN, Ohio – West Virginia State's Kunakorn Tang and Gabriel Cuellar advanced to the final round of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday as the top two individuals from a team that did not make the cut. Meanwhile, the WVSU men's golf team recorded its highest-ever finish at the MEC Tournament by placing seventh.

The top six teams after two rounds and top three individuals not with an advancing team make it to the third round on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets jumped ahead of Notre Dame College in the second round by shooting 31 over par. They finished just six strokes behind sixth-placed West Liberty to barely miss the cut.

Sophomore Kunakorn Tang and junior Gabriel Cuellar will tee off tomorrow at the Avalon Lakes Golf Course after tying for fifth and 13th place, respectively, through two rounds. Tang is seven over par while Cuellar is 12 over par going into the final round. They will be chasing West Virginia Wesleyan's Francisco Taboada who tops the player leaderboard at three under par.

Tang had the second-most birdies (4) in round one and third-most birdies (6) in round two. Additionally, he shot one under par and even on par threes in the first and second rounds, respectively, to finish among the top two in par three scoring on both days.

Cuellar moved up 11 spots on the player leaderboard with a strong second round performance. He shot three under par on par fives and made five birdies to help himself to a third round of golf. He ended up level with the third individual not with an advancing team, Concord's Indiana Eades, who dropped six spots after the second round.

Tang, Cuellar, and Eades will tee off at 9:10 a.m. tomorrow morning. Links to live scoring can be found on the MEC Tournament Central page.
