Box Score 2 After a couple of scoreless innings in the opening game of Friday's softball doubleheader at West Liberty seniors
Dee Dee Loftis and
Sydney Kaplan stepped up and took over for the Yellow Jackets.
Each connected for a two-run home run in the top of the third to stake WVSU to a 4-0 lead. Kaplan added a solo shot to left-center in the fifth.
The Jackets went on to win the opener 6-5 and then rolled to a 10-2 lead in the nightcap in the Mountain East contest.
"Seniors stepped up to lead us to two solid wins today," WVSU softball coach
Kerri Blackwell said. "I am so proud of the team effort and determination shown by all of the players, it was a great day."
A freshman also made a big contribution in game one after the Hilltoppers rallied to tie the score at 5-5 in the sixth with five runs.
After Kaplan drew a one-out walk in the top of the seventh former Parkersburg High star
Brittany Allison belted a double to the gap in left center to drive her home for what proved to be the game winner.
Calli Norton tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.
Norton also pitched game two with WVSU jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first and adding five more in the fifth to claim the five inning "mercy rule" victory.
Loftis drove in two runs in the first while Allison knocked in another and
Allyson Funk one in the Jackets' big first frame,
They would pound out a total of 12 hits on the game with Loftis,
Brookelyn Hale,
Micca Mirabella, Allison, and Funk contributing two each.
WVSU improved to 18-7 overall and 3-1 in MEC play.
