FROSTBURG, Md. — West Virginia State split a doubleheader at Frostburg State, needing just one win to guarantee a spot in the Mountain East Conference Tournament.
West Virginia State opened the day with a 5-3 victory, riding a decisive third inning and solid pitching down the stretch. The Yellow Jackets broke things open with four runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run home run from
Olivia Bell and key contributions from
Avery Contreras, who finished with three hits and an RBI.
Adrianna Green worked 5.1 innings to earn the win, while
Hope Sizemore closed the door over the final 1.2 innings for the save. Frostburg State threatened late, but WVSU's pitching staff limited the damage to secure the win.
In game two, West Virginia State battled throughout but fell 7-6 in a tight contest.
Gianna Sloan-Lebron collected three hits and scored three runs, and
Sydney Shamblin delivered a late two-run home run in the seventh to nearly complete the comeback. WVSU tallied nine hits but was hurt by four errors, allowing Frostburg State to build an early lead that proved just enough to get the win.
With a win today, the Yellow Jackets wait to see their matchup in the Mountain East Conference Tournament starting Wednesday, May 6.
