Box Score 2 The WVSU men's and women's basketball teams fell to visiting Charleston Thursday.
The Yellow Jacket women lost by a 65-56 final count and the men dropped an 82-70 decision in spite of a huge game from
Markee Mazyck.
In the opener the squads traded baskets for most of the game with the Golden Eagles managing to hold onto a narrow lead throughout most of the contest.
The Yellow Jackets rallied to pull ahead by a point twice in the second half and an
Alexus Hobbs free throw with 6:50 to play knotted the score at 47-47.
But the visitors went on a quick 10-2 run to take control down the stretch.
Hobbs finished with 14 points and Shae Hines 12 while
Shealyn Shafer pulled down 12 rebounds to lead WVSU.
The men fought back from a 44-36 halftime deficit to tie the score at 53-53 on a pair of
Dominic Phillips free throws with 12:58 to play.
Over the next few minutes the teams battled on even terms.
Then, with 6:03 to play, the Golden Eagles took of on a 10-0 run to expand a 68-65 lead to 78-65 with 4:31 to play and teh Jackest could never recover.
Mazyck had his biggest night as a Yellow Jacket yet with 34 points and six rebounds.
Phillips contributed 16, including a 9-of-10 performance from the line, and handed out five assists.
