Hernandez Diaz scores as WVSU falls at Point Park

PITTSBURGH – The West Virginia State University women's soccer team conceded a late goal Wednesday night in a 2-1 Mountain East Conference loss at Point Park University. Maria Alejandra Hernandez Diaz provided the lone goal for the Yellow Jackets in the 34th minute. WVSU falls to 3-3-4 overall and 3-2-3 in MEC action, while Point Park improves to 6-3-1 overall with a 6-1-1 mark in conference play.

Action was sparse early in the opening half, marked by a Sara Paris Filter attempt and a pair of Point Park corner kicks. In the 32nd minute, Sharon Freire Omonigho had a shot blocked before Danni Watson connected with Hernandez Diaz less than two minutes later, giving WVSU a 1-0 lead. Jazz Cedillo generated a shot on goal in the 43rd minute that was saved, while Madison Fortin closed out the period with an attempt that sailed high.

The Yellow Jackets created pressure early in the second half, forcing a save off a 48th-minute corner kick to earn a second consecutive corner. Following a Fortin shot that missed, the Pioneers generated a series of shots and corner kicks, all of which failed to reach the net.

Point Park leveled the match in the 67th minute before putting another shot on goal a minute later. Both teams exchanged scoring opportunities over the final 20 minutes, but the Pioneers converted an unassisted strike in the final minute to secure the 2-1 decision.

WVSU returns home to Institute on Sunday, Oct. 4, to host West Liberty University. Kickoff from Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
