INSTITUTE -- The West Virginia State University women's soccer team scored a pair of second half goals Sunday afternoon to win a home Mountain East Conference match, 3-1 over West Liberty University. WVSU improves to 4-3-4 overall, with a 4-2-3 record in MEC action. The Hilltoppers fall to 2-8-1 on the season, with a 2-7 conference record.
It took all of seven minutes for the Yellow Jackets to find the back of the net, as Sara Paris Filter took a free kick and scored off it, giving the Yellow Jackets a very early lead. That was the only goal of the half, though the Yellow Jackets forced three West Liberty saves, taking a total of seven shots in the half.
Danni Watson had a penalty kick chance in the 39th minute, but was unable to convert, sending the match into halftime with WVSU leading 1-0.
Coming out of the halftime break,
Kanon Tai took a shot on goal 54 seconds into the half that was saved. In the 55th minute, WVSU had a pair of shots, neither of which were on goal. After West Liberty scored a goal in the 57th minute, Tai connected five minutes later, giving WVSU the 2-1 lead.
The Hilltoppers started to get chances, getting a shot on goal in the 67th minute, which was saved but resulted in a corner kick for the Hilltoppers. A short time later, WVSU started to threaten to score again, with Madison Rose Fortin taking a shot in the 71st minute that was saved, resulting in another WVSU corner kick.
The final WVSU goal came in the 86th minute when
Leila Karam took a shot that snuck past the keeper, giving WVSU some breathing room at 3-1. That would prove to be the final scoring opportunity for either team, as the Yellow Jackets were able to close the match to take the 3-1 win.
