INSTITUTE – The West Virginia State University women's soccer team battled nonconference opponent Kutztown University to a 2-2 draw Sunday afternoon at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. WVSU moves to 0-1-1 on the season, while Kutztown stands at 1-0-1.
Kutztown got the first scoring chance of the match in the 25th minute, but
Celina Seggelmann made the save. After a pair of Golden Bears shots sailed high,
Maria Alejandra Hernandez Diaz took a shot for WVSU just before the half that missed slightly high, sending the match into halftime scoreless.
It took just three minutes into the second half for the Yellow Jackets to get on the board, as
Leila Karam scored to put WVSU ahead 1-0. Seven minutes later, the Golden Bears responded to tie the match at 1-1. Just seconds after the Kutztown equalizer, WVSU retook the lead when
Sharon Freire Omonigho scored off a rebound to make it 2-1.
The Golden Bears found their second equalizer in the 76th minute on a breakaway by Giavanna Marciano, evening the score at 2-2. Kutztown had a scoring chance in the 88th minute, but the shot hit the right post. WVSU took the final shot with 42 seconds remaining, but it sailed high.
Seggelmann finished with four saves in net for WVSU, the most she has recorded in her collegiate career. For Freire Omonigho and Karam, the goals were their first of the season.
The Yellow Jackets return to the field Sept. 6, opening Mountain East Conference play against Glenville State University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium.
