INSTITUTE – The West Virginia State University women's soccer team dropped its Mountain East Conference opener 1-0 to visiting Glenville State University. WVSU moves to 0-2-1 on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 1-2.
The lone goal of the match came from the Pioneers in the sixth minute to give Glenville State an early 1-0 lead. WVSU generated a pair of initial attempts from
Kaylee Smith and
Michaela Sannoh, but neither was on goal. The Yellow Jackets forced the GSU goalkeeper into action in the 31st minute on a shot on target from
Danni Watson, but WVSU entered halftime trailing 1-0.
It took just five minutes for the Yellow Jackets to register a shot on goal in the second half. A couple of minutes later, a WVSU corner kick sparked a flurry of action that resulted in three shots—two on target—forcing a pair of saves. The Yellow Jackets outshot the Pioneers in the second half with seven total attempts, but Glenville State turned away all three on goal to preserve the 1-0 victory.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Wednesday, Sept. 9, traveling to Ohio to face the newest member of the MEC, Shawnee State University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
