WVSU falls in season opener

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia State women's soccer team opened its season Thursday afternoon, dropping a nonconference matchup 3-1 to Shepherd University. The Yellow Jackets fall to 0-1, while Shepherd moves to 1-0.

Rachel Okoro got the first look at the net for WVSU, taking consecutive shots in the 34th minute before scoring unassisted in the 37th minute to give WVSU an early 1-0 lead. Eight minutes later, the Rams scored to tie the match heading into halftime. Shepherd took its first lead in the 51st minute before adding an insurance goal in the 66th minute.

Okoro led WVSU with a goal and four shots. The Yellow Jackets recorded seven total shots, with Sharon Freire Omonigho, Maria Alejandra Hernandez Diaz and Kanon Tai each taking a shot. Celina Seggelmann made one save, coming in the 54th minute.

The Yellow Jackets return to Institute for their home opener Sunday, hosting Kutztown University. Kickoff at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium is set for 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on wvsuyellowjackets.com.
