INSTITUTE – West Virginia State University Director of Athletics
David Hicks has announced changes to the Sports Information office, including the hiring of
Stevie Larson as Sports Information Director.
Robbie Mounts has also been promoted to Associate Sports Information Director.
Larson comes to State after spending over four years working at King University, most recently as Director of Athletic Communications. While at King, Larson was part of the athletic communications staff that was named 2022-23 Conference Carolinas Athletic Communications Staff of the Year. Prior to King, Larson held internships at Newberry College (S.C.) and Northeastern State University (Okla.). He also spent time interning for the Northwoods League office during the summer of 2020.
"Stevie's vast experience, his genuine passion for promoting student athletes, and proven track record in media relations will be invaluable as we continue to elevate our sports information operation," said Hicks. "I'm excited for what he brings to the table, and for the positive impact it will have on our student athletes."
Outside of work, Larson is involved with Minnesota American Legion baseball, helping as an Assistant Coach for Tri-City Red, and also helping run various tournaments throughout the Twin Cities. A native of White Bear Lake, MN, Larson graduated from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2019 with a Bachelor's degree in Multimedia Journalism.
After spending the past year and half as the Assistant Sports Information Director, Mounts has been elevated to Associate Sports Information Director. He has been instrumental in enhancing and improving the WVSU live streams, expanding the Yellow Jackets' social media presence, and improving the game day experience for student athletes and fans.
"Robbie's work at WVSU has been invaluable the last couple of years," said Head Baseball Coach Sean Loyd. "His attention to detail and his dedication to our student athletes has made a noticeable difference. He is a respected part of WVSU Athletics and I am happy that he will continue to be part of our team."
Prior to beginning full-time employment at WVSU, Robbie was no stranger to Institute, having spent ten years as a director and producer with Video Productions, who produced many WVSU live streams, as well as MEC Championship events. In addition, Robbie served as director or producer for a variety of WVSSAC State Tournaments and live coverage.
Hicks continued, "Robbie's well-deserved promotion, along with Stevie's hiring, equips the WVSU Sports Information office with the talent and vision to continue to build a comprehensive strategic communications platform and grow the WVSU brand in the Kanawha Valley, throughout the state and into the larger region."
