WVSU sweeps Davis & Elkins in doubleheader

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State baseball team capped off the weekend with a doubleheader sweep over Davis & Elkins Sunday afternoon. WVSU took the first game 9-8 in 11 innings before a 9-4 win in the second game.

The wins bump WVSU's record to 17-26 on the season, with a 10-16 record in Mountain East Conference play. The Senators drop to a 5-41 record, with a 3-23 mark in MEC action.

WVSU started things early in game one, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first, with Angel Oquendo and Ethan Spolarich each picking up an RBI double in the frame. Nate Bittinger added to the WVSU lead in the fourth, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Garrett Wagoner, making it a 5-3 lead. In the top of the seventh, the Senators scored four runs to take an 8-6 lead, with the Yellow Jackets getting a two-run home run from Aidan Paulsen in the bottom of the frame to send the game to extra innings.

It took until the bottom of the 11th inning for the next run to score, and it came on a walk-off single by Wagoner, scoring Tyler Perdue with the game winning run. Spolarich was 3-for-5 in the win, with an RBI. Paulsen, Bittinger and Barnitz each had a pair of hits for the Yellow Jackets. Karson Frye took the win, throwing 4.2 innings of relief ball, allowing no runs with five strikeouts.

In the second game, it was the Senators who got things started, scoring in the top of the first. The Yellow Jackets scored another four runs in the bottom of the first, with Brodie Guenther and Spolarich each hitting home runs. WVSU added a run in the third when Wagoner hit an RBI single, driving in Paulsen with the fifth run.

In the sixth, WVSU got some insurance runs when Paulsen hit a grand slam to left center field, clearing the bases and giving the Yellow jackets a 9-4 cushion. The Senators scored a run in the seventh, but the Yellow Jackets were able to escape with the 9-4 win. Paulsen, Spolarich and Wagoner each had two hits, with Paulsen driving in four runs and Spolarich adding three RBI.

WVSU will close the season with a four game series coming up against the University of Charleston. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at UC before facing off in a doubleheader at Cal Bailey Field.
