WVSU splits doubleheader with Davis & Elkins

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State baseball team split their Mountain East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon, using an offensive explosion to take a 15-1 win in the first game before a 6-3 loss in game two of the day.

The Yellow Jackets are now 15-26 on the season, with an 8-16 mark in MEC play. The Senators move to 5-39, with a 3-21 conference record.

The WVSU offense came alive in the first game, scoring two runs in the fourth, five in the fifth and eight in the sixth. Brodie Guenther was 4-for-4, with two RBI and three runs scored, while Michael Bittinger and Ethan Spolarich both had a pair of hits. Ethyn Barnitz, Aidan Paulsen and Angel Oquendo all had home runs for the Yellow Jackets. Bryce Eggleton earned his fifth win of the season on the mound, throwing 4.2 innings, with one earned run allowed.

The WVSU fourth started with Paulsen drawing a walk, before he worked his way around the bases to score on a wild pitch. The power came in the fifth inning, as Barnitz had a three-run home run, starting what would turn out to be a five-run inning, putting WVSU ahead 7-1. In the sixth Paulsen and Oquendo went back-to-back with home runs, helping the Yellow Jackets to a 15-1 advantage.

In the second game, Guenther was 2-for-3, while Oquendo hit his second home run of the day. Karson Frye threw three relief innings, allowing one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts.

WVSU got things started in the bottom of the first, as Bittinger reached base on a fielding error, scoring when Oquendo hit a two-run home run. After the Senators scored four runs in the top of the second, Guenther had an RBI single, allowing Aidan Youngblood to score from second base, bringing the Yellow Jackets to within 4-3. The Senators scored insurance runs in the fourth and seventh innings, as Collin Schneider threw a complete game to pick up the win.

The two teams will conclude the four-game series Sunday afternoon at Cal Bailey Field. First pitch of the day is scheduled for 1 p.m.
