INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State secured a strong home victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Bluefield State 5-2 at the Marvin D. Mills Tennis Complex in Institute, continuing its momentum with a well-rounded performance across doubles and singles play.
West Virginia State set the tone early by sweeping all three doubles matches to claim the opening point. The Yellow Jackets controlled each court, with the No. 1 pairing of
Heinrich Lindeque and
Patchara Suklian earning a 6-4 win, while
Niclas Naedele and
Ben Steinhoefel (No. 2) and
Facundo Campana Urcia and
Alejandro Polo Alferez (No. 3) each delivered decisive 6-2 victories. The clean sweep gave WVSU a commanding edge heading into singles competition.
In singles play, West Virginia State continued to showcase depth, winning four of the six matches to seal the team victory. Suklian dominated at No. 2 with a straight-sets win, while Campana Urcia (No. 4), Steinhoefel (No. 5), and Polo Alferez (No. 6) each added key points with strong performances. Despite losses at No. 1 and No. 3, the Yellow Jackets maintained control throughout, using their early doubles advantage and consistent singles play to secure the 5-2 result.
Yellow Jackets will host rival University of Charleston on Tuesday, April 21.
