INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State split Sunday's Mountain East Conference doubleheader with Glenville State, rallying for a dramatic walk-off win in the opener before dropping the nightcap despite 12 hits. After splitting both Saturday and Sunday, the Yellow Jackets sit 4th in the MEC South, one game ahead of Glenville State.
In Game 1, West Virginia State erased a late tie and walked off Glenville State for a 6-5 win in seven innings. The Yellow Jackets jumped out early with a four-run first, capitalizing on Glenville State errors before
Ethyn Barnitz launched a two-run homer to put WVSU ahead 4-0. Glenville State battled back to tie the game at 5-5 in the sixth, but WVSU answered in the bottom of the seventh when
Angel Oquendo singled, moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Barnitz's walk-off single to left. Barnitz finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Oquendo homered and scored twice.
Hunter McSweeney earned the win with 1.2 scoreless innings in relief as the Yellow Jackets snapped Glenville State's comeback bid.
In Game 2, the Yellow Jackets couldn't overcome a rough defensive afternoon in a 6-4 loss. WVSU collected 12 hits and rallied from an early 2-0 deficit, scoring once in the fourth and three times in the fifth to tie the game.
Garrett Wagoner drove in a run, Barnitz stayed hot with a 3-for-4 effort and two RBIs, and
Ayden Youngblood added an RBI single. But Glenville State took advantage of five WVSU errors and plated the go-ahead runs in the sixth. The Yellow Jackets threatened late, getting a seventh-inning single from Barnitz, but Glenville State closed the door to salvage the split.
The Yellow Jackets will not be hosting Malone on Tuesday, April 14, and will see action again Saturday, April 18 at Concord.
