INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Concord, as the Yellow Jackets showed flashes late but couldn't overcome early deficits in Athens.
In the opener, Concord used a five-run first inning to seize control and never looked back in a 10-2 win over West Virginia State. The Yellow Jackets managed just three hits, with
Ethan Spolarich collecting two and
Michael Bittinger driving in a run, while
Tyler Perdue and
Preston Keiffer accounted for the team's two runs. Despite settling in after the opening frame,
Brian Lingenfelter was tagged with the loss after allowing 10 runs across six innings. WVSU scratched across single runs in the third and seventh innings, but couldn't string together enough offense against Concord starter Kaden Varela-Payne, who struck out six and limited the Jackets to one earned run.
In game two, the Yellow Jackets again fell behind early as Concord plated runs in four of the first six innings en route to a 12-2 victory. WVSU showed resilience late, scoring twice in the seventh behind a two-RBI double from
Samuel Booth, who provided a bright spot off the bench.
Michael Bittinger and
Aidan Paulsen also recorded hits, but the Jackets were held scoreless through the first six innings by Concord starter Jonah Adams.
Braylon Moore took the loss for WVSU after allowing three runs in two innings, while Concord's offense was powered by multiple home runs from Korbin Bostic. Despite the final score, West Virginia State continued to battle late, putting together its best offensive inning in the seventh.
Four-game series with Concord will conclude tomorrow, April 19 with another doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM.
