WVSU Offense Breaks Out in 18-Hit Win, Rock Takes Series

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — West Virginia State picked up a high-scoring extra-inning victory in the second game of a three-game weekend series but fell in the opener and finale against Slippery Rock at Critchfield Park.

Post-Game Records:
WVSU: 5-9
Slippery Rock: 7-3

Game 1 — Slippery Rock 8, West Virginia State 7

Slippery Rock held off a late push by West Virginia State to claim an 8–7 victory in the series opener.

The Yellow Jackets matched the Rock offensively with several big swings, including home runs from Ethyn Barnitz, Garrett Wagoner and Aidan Paulsen.

Wagoner and Paulsen each drove in runs as WVSU kept pace throughout the game, while Brodie Guenther finished 2-for-4 at the plate.

Despite the offensive production, Slippery Rock managed to hold the lead down the stretch to secure the narrow win.

Game two was originally scheduled to be after game one on Saturday afternoon, but bad weather forced the two teams to move the back end of the doubleheader to Sunday afternoon.

Game 2 — West Virginia State 11, Slippery Rock 8 (8 innings)

West Virginia State responded with its strongest offensive performance of the weekend in the rescheduled game, collecting 18 hits in an 11–8 extra-inning victory.

The Yellow Jackets broke the game open with a three-run eighth inning.

Cameron Peschl went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the offense, while Brodie Guenther added two hits and three RBIs. Angel Oquendo finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.

Garrett Wagoner contributed a double, triple and RBI, and Ethan Spolarich went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two walks. Aidan Paulsen also recorded two hits and drove in a run.

Braylon Moore earned the win in relief as the Yellow Jackets secured the opener of the Sunday doubleheader.

Game 3 — Slippery Rock 7, West Virginia State 1

Slippery Rock jumped out to an early lead and capitalized on several defensive miscues to take the series finale 7–1.

Slippery Rock scored three runs in the first inning before adding four more in the fourth. Only three of the runs were earned as West Virginia State committed four errors in the game.

The Yellow Jackets' lone run came in the sixth inning when Garrett Wagoner hit a solo home run to left field.

Angel Oquendo led WVSU offensively with two hits, while Ethan Spolarich, Michael Bittinger and Cameron Peschl each added a hit.

Jared Nethercutt started on the mound for the Yellow Jackets, allowing seven runs — three earned — over four innings.
