INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State opened a road doubleheader against West Liberty on Friday afternoon but fell in both contests, dropping the opener 8–0 before a competitive second game ended in a 9–5 Hilltopper victory.
In Game 1, West Virginia State struggled to generate offense as West Liberty jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The Hilltoppers scored three runs in the first inning on a three-run homer by Luke Foley and added three more in the second to quickly build a six-run advantage. WVSU managed just two hits in the contest, including a double from
Cameron Peschl and a single from Aiden Paulsen.
Bryce Eggleton provided some stability on the mound in relief, tossing 4.1 innings while striking out four, but the Yellow Jackets were unable to break through against West Liberty starter John Thompson, who held WVSU scoreless through six innings.
In Game 2, the Yellow Jackets showed early offensive firepower, scoring four runs in the first inning to take a quick lead.
Garrett Wagoner delivered a two-run double and
Ethan Spolarich followed with a two-run homer to put West Virginia State in front. However, West Liberty responded with a decisive eight-run second inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Hunter White that swung the momentum. WVSU continued to battle at the plate, finishing with six hits, including two from
Michael Bittinger, while Wagoner and Spolarich each drove in two runs. The Yellow Jackets added another run in the sixth inning but could not close the gap as the Hilltoppers held on for the 9–5 win.
Yellow Jackets look to redeem the weekend in a doubleheader at Wheeling tomorrow, March 15.
