INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State came out victorious in a pair of tightly contested tennis matches Saturday at the Marvin D. Mills Tennis Complex, winning 4-2 in women's, and 5-3 in men's.
In the women's match, West Virginia State earned a 4-2 victory over Edinboro behind a strong start in doubles and clutch performances in singles. The Yellow Jackets swept the completed doubles courts to claim the early point, with the duos of
Maria Mercedes Kaltakian and
Amanda Menendez Thomasson, along with Daniela Cruzado Fretel and
Talia Nichols, each earning 6-3 wins. In singles, Kaltakian battled to a three-set win at No. 1, while Menendez-Thomasson dominated at No. 2 in straight sets.
Carlota Pamies Petit added another point by forfeit, helping seal the team victory despite Edinboro picking up wins at Nos. 4 and 5.
On the men's side, West Virginia State pulled out a narrow 4-3 win over Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in a match that came down to the final courts. The Yellow Jackets took two of three doubles matches to gain early momentum, highlighted by wins from the pairs of
Forkane Lebdi and
Wacil El Hanafi, and
Heinrich Lindeque and
Patchara Suklian. In singles play, Lebdi delivered a hard-fought victory at No. 1, while Suklian added another key win at No. 3 in a tight match. El Hanafi secured the decisive point at No. 5 with a straight-set performance, lifting WVSU to the team victory despite Edinboro claiming three singles courts.
Both teams will be hosting Davis & Elkins this coming Wednesday at Marvin D. Mills Tennis Complex.
