Rogers's Career High Paces Yellow Jackets In Victory Over Salem

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — Kenly Rogers scored a career-high 20 points to lead West Virginia State to a 71–53 victory over Salem (WV) on Saturday inside the Walker Convocation Center, completing the season sweep against the non-conference foe.

West Virginia State (11–13) opened the game on a 7–0 run and built a 23–10 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets shot 9-of-17 in the opening period and recorded six blocks while holding Salem to 3-of-15 shooting.

WVSU extended the margin to 38–27 at halftime. Salem trimmed the deficit to 11 late in the second quarter, but the Yellow Jackets closed the half with a layup from Kenly Rogers and limited the Tigers to 5-of-13 shooting in the period.

The Yellow Jackets created further separation in the third quarter, outscoring Salem 21–14. Ahjanae Young scored seven points in the frame as WVSU increased its lead to 59–41 entering the fourth.

Salem (2–21) did not get closer than 16 points in the final quarter.

Rogers finished 7-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, in her career-best outing. Ahjanae Young added 15 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Imani Hickman scored 14 points, and Baylee Goins contributed 13 points, six rebounds, four steals and three blocks.

West Virginia State shot 26-of-57 (45.6%) for the game and recorded 12 blocks and 12 steals while forcing 21 turnovers. The Yellow Jackets held a 38–10 advantage in points in the paint and a 21–14 edge in fast-break points.

Taja Brown led Salem with 16 points. Meilin Guo and Kamarice Jackson each added nine.

WVSU travels to Elkins on Wednesday for a midweek clash against the Davis and Elkins Senators. WVSU took a 78-46 decision in Institute during their first outing on January 14th. Tip off for the rematch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
