West Virginia State rolls at D&E behind Rogers’ seven 3s

ELKINS, W.Va. — Kenly Rogers poured in a career-high 33 points and West Virginia State controlled the game from start to finish Wednesday night, earning an 87–62 Mountain East Conference win over Davis & Elkins inside the McDonnell Center.

The Yellow Jackets (11–13, 7–10 MEC) came out sharp on both ends, forcing early turnovers and turning them into quick offense while building a 22–14 first-quarter lead. Davis & Elkins (1–25, 0–17 MEC) briefly answered with a late push in the opening period and trimmed into single digits, but State continued to get quality looks and carried a 36–27 advantage into halftime.

West Virginia State then delivered its best stretch right after the break. The Yellow Jackets opened the third quarter by getting stops and cleaning the glass, extending the margin to double figures and pushing the lead to 62–49 by the end of the period. D&E made a couple of threes to keep pace in the middle of the quarter, but State repeatedly responded — either with finishes at the rim or timely perimeter shots to prevent any sustained momentum.

In the fourth, WVSU continued to widen the gap with points in transition and steady free-throw shooting, putting the game out of reach down the stretch. Rogers did most of her damage from deep, knocking down seven 3-pointers (7-for-8) and finishing 9-for-10 from the field while going 8-for-8 at the line. Baylee Goins added 16 points and three assists, Latisha Parris posted 14 points with seven rebounds and three steals, and Ahjanae Young chipped in 13 points.

As a team, West Virginia State shot 52.6% (30-of-57) from the floor and matched that rate from three (10-of-19), while also getting a big lift from its bench with 39 points. Davis & Elkins was led by Kylie Morris with 19 points and Kaitlyn Parker with 16.

The Yellow Jackets return home for the penultimate home contest of the season on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 2:00 p.m. when State hosts West Virginia Wesleyan on the floor of the Walker Convocation Center.
