INSTITUTE – The West Virginia State University women's volleyball team earned a four-set victory Saturday evening over Frostburg State University inside the Walker Convocation Center. WVSU improves to 8-10 overall and 4-4 in Mountain East Conference action, while Frostburg State falls to 5-13 overall and 2-6 in MEC play.
Carmen Pérez powered the Yellow Jackets with 20 kills and 16 digs, while Deniz Akgul posted 18 kills. Audrey Buck dished out 37 assists and recorded 11 digs, while Lilly Adkins logged a team-high 21 digs.
Frostburg State controlled the opening set early, taking a 7-3 advantage and extending its lead to 21-12. WVSU answered with an 11-1 run—highlighted by three kills from Pérez and a pair of kills apiece from Milena Jansson and Akgul—to take a 23-22 lead. The Bobcats responded late, capturing five of the final seven points to claim a 27-25 set victory.
In the second set, WVSU held an early 8-6 lead before mounting an 11-1 run to pull ahead 19-7. Following two Frostburg State points, the Yellow Jackets reeled off five unanswered points to seal a dominant 25-9 set win. WVSU hit .545 in the frame, recording 14 total kills.
The Bobcats leveled the score at 3-3 early in the third set before a 4-1 WVSU run pushed the margin to 7-4. Frostburg State answered with a 5-2 run to level the score at 9-9 before Baylee Smith and Akgul delivered back-to-back kills for an 11-9 WVSU lead. After the Bobcats surged ahead 14-11, Marcelina Pyka posted consecutive kills to level the score at 14-14. Frostburg State reached set point at 24-22 before a WVSU timeout sparked a set-ending 4-0 run—capitalizing on three Frostburg State attack errors—to claim the set 26-24 and take a 2-1 match lead.
In the fourth set, Frostburg State leveled the score at 5-5 before WVSU used a 5-1 spurt—including four kills from Pérez—to build a 10-6 lead. The advantage swelled to 18-9 following a Pérez service ace. After two Bobcats points, WVSU closed out the match on a 7-1 run, capped by an Adkins service ace and back-to-back kills from Buck and Akgul to secure a 25-12 set win and the 3-1 match victory.
WVSU travels next week for a pair of conference matches, visiting Davis & Elkins College on Friday, Oct. 16, before facing Point Park University on Saturday, Oct. 17.
