WVSU sweeps Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's volleyball team earned a 3-0 Mountain East Conference victory Friday night over Davis & Elkins College. WVSU improves to 9-10 overall and 5-4 in MEC play.

The Senators opened the match with a 3-1 lead before WVSU executed a 10-0 run to pull ahead 11-3. After Davis & Elkins closed the margin to 16-10, the Yellow Jackets finished the set on a 9-6 run—highlighted by two kills apiece from Baylee Smith, Marcelina Pyka, and Carmen Pérez—to secure a 25-16 set win.

Davis & Elkins captured six of the first eight points in the second set before WVSU used a 5-0 spurt to take a 10-9 lead. The Senators later built a 20-15 advantage before WVSU answered with a set-ending 10-1 run. Pérez delivered a kill and a service ace during the stretch, Deniz Akgul brought WVSU to set point at 24-21 with a kill, and Pyka sealed the 25-21 set win with a solo block.

The Yellow Jackets seized the momentum early in the third set, scoring the first five points behind two kills from Maya Vilmar and back-to-back service aces from Pérez. WVSU extended its advantage to 16-10 before the Senators scored four consecutive points to pull within 16-14.

Three consecutive Davis & Elkins attack errors sparked a 6-1 WVSU run, extending the lead to 22-15 and forcing a Senators timeout. Davis & Elkins scored three of the next four points to close within 23-18, but WVSU claimed the final two points to cap a 25-18 set victory and complete the 3-0 sweep.

WVSU will close the weekend Saturday with a 1 p.m. match at Point Park University before facing Concord University Tuesday night.
