CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia State's women's soccer team knocked off the University of Charleston for the second straight time, earning a 2-0 victory on Wednesday night. Goals from Aika Tobaru and Maria Hernandez Diaz lifted the Yellow Jackets to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in Mountain East Conference play, while the Golden Eagles fell to 1-3 (1-1 MEC).
Goalkeeper Poppy Bastock recorded her first career clean sheet, making four saves to keep UC off the board. Hernandez Diaz fired four shots, with her lone attempt on target finding the back of the net. Tobaru and Sara París also kept the pressure on with two shots on goal apiece. One of Tobaru's shots ended up being the game-winner.
Tobaru struck early, taking a feed from Paris in the 7th minute and finishing past the UC goalkeeper to put State up 1-0. Bastock preserved the lead late in the first half, stopping three attempts following consecutive UC corner kicks.
The Jackets doubled their advantage in the 63rd minute when Nagi Higashi sent in a corner kick that found Hernandez Diaz, who headed it home for her first goal of the year. State's defense held firm the rest of the way to seal the win.
West Virginia State will travel to Buckhannon to face West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, Sept. 21, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
